Terry was one of the brilliant kids who had everything they needed in spades, except for a family that could afford to educate them.
It was difficult for him right from preschool, having to hear hateful words like rag-boy and dump baby.
The town was relatively small and filled with rich kids who lived in big houses, so it didn’t take much to stand out and be bullied for being different.
He got wedgies and had his lunch thrown in the bin every day at school. He never got invited to parties and had only two friends who had pretty much braved the whole school to be friends with him.
But he had gotten past it. Terry made it safely past high-schools intense drama and emotional benders to graduate right on time, doing all sorts of jobs to keep himself going. Unfortunately, he was forced to stay behind at home while his mates went on to college because there wasn’t any money, and he hadn’t quite met scholarship requirements.
So he had to wait and work to see if he could save up for college and try the next year again.
It wasn’t that they couldn’t scrimp around to send him to college when it came to it. It was just that the college the young man had set his sights on was simply a bit more expensive than usual.
