There are many types of diets: low-fat diet, vegetarian, no carb, etc… Especially on social media, where fitness gurus abound who, without a degree to back up their expertise, can start dishing out miracle weight-loss diets.

With so much interest in dieting, how does one know which ones are healthy and which ones are not?

People go on diets for many reasons. Some people are overweight, so they are unhealthy and need to pay more attention to their diet and exercise habits. Others play sports and want their bodies to be in top condition. Still, others believe they will look better if they lose a few pounds (or kilograms).

Many people feel a lot of pressure to lose weight and try different types of diets. However, if you really need to lose weight, improving your diet and exercise habits will help you more than any miracle diet.

Can diets be unhealthy?

Everyone needs to consume enough calories for the body to function properly. Any diet that consumes less than daily calories is dangerous. An extremely low-fat diet can also be bad for you since everyone needs to take in a certain amount of fat through diet; therefore, no one should eat a fat-free diet. Approximately 30% of your total daily calories should come from a source of healthy fats.
