We have so many tasks to do every single day that sometimes our lives get overwhelmingly stressful — no wonder mental health problems are now on a rise among working adults. This busyness might prompt you to work more and harder but sometimes what you actually need to do is literally nothing; or as Dutch, say, do “Niksen”.

Niksen is not a waste of time

Most wellness focus on what more you can do to improve your life. But, maybe the better question to ask yourself is what less can I do to make my life more fulfilling?

That is the beauty of Niksen: it is literally about doing nothing or at least doing less than you usually do. It’s like meditation, but instead of sitting in the lotus position and humming back to relaxing music, you just do nothing. No rules to follow. No special preparation needed.

You might think that it’s counterproductive, but Niksen can actually make you happier and more efficient in the simplest ways possible:

  1. It can help break the habit of reaching for your phone when boredom hits.
  2. It can give your brain a needed break before brainstorming new ideas or diving into a new project.
